Looking for additional funding?

The Grasp! board receives many emails with questions concerning additional research funding. These questions range from questions about travel scholarships for conferences to funding for a post-doc position for after the PhD period. There are many ways to get additional funding, as there are many organizations providing for these funds. In this article we will give you some starting points for your search for research funds. Of course this list is not complete, and if you find that some important sources are missing, please write to , so that we can provide this information to fellow PhD candidates on our website.

From the University of Groningen:

The main office to start from is the Transfer and Liaison Group (TLG). The Transfer & Liaison Groep is a faculty department of the Office of the University of Groningen (RuG). They are the main link between RuG academics on the one hand and authorities (local, regional and national) and the business community on the other. The TLG can be found at the University’s Zernike Science Park and on their website.

>For after the PhD period, the university offers, among others, the Rosalind Franklin Fellowships . This fellowship promotes the participation of women in arts and sciences. The fellowship sponsors for a tenure track position in the University.

Besides that there are several possibilities for PhD programmes. These scholarships provide the funding for a PhD position for four years. Click here for more information.

The Stichting Groninger Universiteitsfonds gives subsidies to students who want to travel abroad for example in order to go to a conference or workshop. This fund is not available to PhD students with an employee status.

The Eric Bleumink Fonds gives funding to talented students and young researchers from developing countries. Besides that the organization organizes international conferences and develops new initiatives concerning education and research.

Besides the above mentioned options, you can try to get funding from your own Faculty, Research School, Graduate School or Research Institute.

Outside the University of Groningen:

NWO: The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

Innovation and quality. Keywords for the future of Dutch science, according to the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Together with scientists, (inter)national organizations and companies NWO develops and funds top-quality research programmes. Some 4,500 researchers are employed at universities and institutes thanks to NWO funding. All in all some 450 million Euro each year.

KNAW: Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.The Academy's mission is to ensure the quality of scientific research in the Netherlands. The fundamental research carried out today will provide a basis for the applied research of tomorrow and, in turn, for the practical application of science in the future. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences:

    Awards grants for research, conference visits or periods of residence abroad;

    Contributes to the cost of organizing international conferences, workshops and colloquia in the Netherlands;

    Promotes international communication and partnerships.

Nuffic: the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education, was established in 1952. Its main objective is expressed in its mission statement:Nuffic is a non-profit, professional organization aimed at making education more accessible all over the world, especially in countries where educational infrastructure is lagging behind. Education is crucial for fostering global socio-economic development, improving the quality of life, and increasing intercultural understanding. Nuffic strives to be the intermediary between the education community of the Netherlands and the international community.Nuffic’s main areas of activity are:1. Development cooperation.2. Internationalization of higher education. 3. International recognition and certification. 4. Marketing of Dutch higher education.

This Dutch Mobility Portal is organised by Nuffic and aims at providing mobile researchers intending to work and live in the Netherlands with updated, correct and easily accesible information concerning all matters related to their professional stay and daily lives. The Portal also aims at providing support staff, working at organisations hosting mobile researchers, with correct and easily accessible information in order for them to support the mobile researchers wishing to come and work at their organisation. The Netherlands Student Grantfinder is an online search engine for those who want to study in the Netherlands and are looking for financial aid. The Grantfinder contains information on a range of Dutch scholarships for foreign students.

Murie Curie/Cordis
Marie Curie Fellowships provide European placements for pre and post-doctoral researchers, usually up to the age of 35, and for experienced researchers. Fellowships are available in any scientific discipline that contributes to the objectives of the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5). Applicants to this activity are young and experienced researchers and host organizations in academia and industry.

This part of the RuG website offers regulations concerning (among others) your defense. Furthermore the University offers subsidies for publishing your dissertation. From this main page, go to appendix 8. Here you will read about the subsidy of 750 euros you can apply for in order to print your thesis.
