Since the introduction of a new PhD system in the Netherlands in 2004 the matters of PhD students have become difficult to address. Now there is no longer one category of PhD students. Depending on the contract with the university, age and nationality parameters such as salary, taxation, health insurance, holidays etc. differ widely between PhDs. Currently we distinguish 4 different categories of PhDs:

• PhD student
• Scholarship PhD
• 30+ Grant PhD
• Assistantship PhD
