The University of Groningen sees itself as an international university. In fact, if you take a look around, you will see quite some colleagues originating from countries all over the world. In 2005 the University of Groningen formulated strong ambitions on internationalisation. The aim of the university board is to attract as many as 5000 international undergraduate students in 2014. But also the PhD student community is becoming more international since the introduction of the Ubbo-Emmius grant, which was established especially for international PhD students. This surely is enough reason to dedicate a separate section on our homepage to international PhD students. Moreover, since international PhDs run into specific problems associated with integrating into the new culture. The Dutch language, however, is not the most prominent issue, as you may think. In the Netherlands almost everybody speaks good English, which on the other hand is not very helpful for those who really want to learn Dutch. In order to help foreign PhDs getting along, the university has developed a document wich addresses all kinds of practical matters. You can download this document here.
